On June 30th, EDC held its “2nd EDC UK Payments and Cards Council” in London. Similar to previous years, the council has provided a platform for discussion on key issues and topics amongst senior executives of the cards and payment industry in the UK and a number of other markets. This year’s focus has been Advanced Payments and Mobile Payments.
After introductory remarks by the host of the evening Samee Zafar, he presented selective draft findings of EDC’s annual survey on advanced payments, covering everything from internet, contactless/NFC and mobile payments. He provided market analysis and gave his perspectives on growth, challenges, strategic directions and market sizes for the three types of advanced payments. He highlighted the opportunities such payments can provide for a range of different customer segments but also identified issues that need to be addressed like the lack of enabling infrastructure or limited merchant acceptance.

This year’s focus has been Advanced Payments and Mobile Payments.
The first keynote speaker was Richard Johnson, Chief Strategy Officer of Monitise who spoke on his company’s approach to creating a mobile money ecosystem on the very day that Visa announced a significant investment in the company. Richard stressed the importance of bringing financial institutions, mobile operators and retailers together to tap into the huge potential that mobile money can bring to consumers of all ages and socio-economic classes. He not only highlighted the progress that Monitise has done in bringing various stakeholders together but also provided a number of case studies demonstrating the different offerings that are out in the marketplace.

On June 30th, EDC held its “2nd EDC UK Payments and Cards Council” in London. Similar to previous years, the council has provided a platform for discussion on key issues and topics amongst senior executives of the cards and payment industry in the UK and a number of other markets. This year’s focus has been Advanced Payments and Mobile Payments.
The second keynote speaker was Roy Vella, Director Group Mobile of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. Using as a starting point the fact that there are approx. 3.5bn mobile handsets globally, Roy talked about the evolution and trends that he sees in the mobile space. Amongst other things Roy spoke about increasingly sophisticated devices that are converging, specific value propositions that address user / consumer needs, network effects and consumer experiences, all of which shaping the future of mobile payment technology. Finally, Roy also highlighted the need for co-operation between banks and mobile operators and indicated short-term progress in those discussions. The event was very well attended and positively received by the audience, who actively participated during the session leading to interesting discussions around the different topics. The audience consisted of a broad mix of senior executives from banks, card schemes, card issuers, acquirers, merchants, telecom companies, mobile payment solution providers and processors, as well as other industry representatives.

On June 10th, EDC held its “5th EDC Payments and Cards Council” in Frankfurt, Germany. Similar to previous years, the council has provided a platform for discussion on key issues and topics amongst senior executives of the cards and payment industry within Germany. This year’s focus has been Advanced Payments and Mobile Payments.
Introductory remarks were delivered by the host of the event Ulf Geismar, during which he provided definitions as to what Advanced Payments constitute of, the first keynote speaker was Eckhard Ortwein, Area Vice President EMEA of Sybase 365 and CEO of paybox solutions AG. In his presentation, Mr Ortwein provided a range of examples of implemented m-payments and m-commerce applications and highlighted the need for interoperability and standardisation for a successful roll-out.

On behalf of EDC, Erik van Winkel spoke about the implications and opportunities from the PSD for different organizations. Erik also touched upon derogations in the transposition process across EU member states and challenged whether the PSD would meet its objective of achieving full harmonization across Europe. Finally, Erik talked about outstanding or open issues and amongst other aspects referred to the status of mobile phone operators that in some countries are considered “out-of-scope” and in others as “in-scope”.

Speaking at the first Edgar Dunn & Company Payments and Cards Council to be held in the UK John Chaplin, European Payments Adviser from First Data, gave insight on what the PSD actually means at the ‘sharp end’. He talked about the processors perspective of turning the PSD into reality and the expectations that financial institutions have in an organization like First Data in helping them to become PSD compliant. However, John clearly stressed the point that the PSD is not just a compliance issue but an important business issue.

The primary objectives of the survey were to review and understand the growth in mobile wallets and mobile financial services, understand the levels of importance attached to each type of mobile financial service, and identify the expected hurdles for deployment and growth.
The GSMA has over 700 active members. Survey participants accounted for approximately 26% of the mobile operator subscriber base on a global basis as at the end of December 2007.
