Conversation With Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, CEO of Blik

Dariusz Mazurkiewicz, CEO of Blik, spoke to EDC’s Samee Zafar.

So what makes BLIK better than the rest?

BLIK is an innovative mobile payment scheme, one of the first in the European market built on a unique model of cooperation across banks, payment acquirers and merchants. BLIK is convenient and safe. It allows a user to complete a transaction securely over the internet, on a mobile, or in a shop. BLIK also allows for ATM cash withdrawals and person-to-person payments using just your phone number. It is a truly cardless payment scheme.

It is versatile and intuitive. A consumer can make all types of payments quickly, securely, and cheaply. The user experience is awesome. It is really easy to use. Anyone with a smartphone and a bank account in Poland – which is pretty much everyone – can use it. It also has a “OneClick” feature which makes the payment process even quicker. Those who are already registered with an online or mobile merchant can initiate transactions without using any codes. And, unlike other payment methods, you don’t need to enter any personal data.

Do you think, in the future, bank transfers will overtake card payments for digital commerce?

Well, in the case of BLIK, the future is here! It is already happening – right here in Poland. BLIK is becoming more popular than cards for online transactions. We estimate that BLIK has over 35% share of ecommerce in Poland. Over the next 5 years, it will become the dominant method of payment on the Internet not only for domestic but also for cross-border transactions. Our partners are promoting BLIK because consumers love it. Our market research shows that when shopping online, consumers are more likely to use BLIK than other methods.

What are your hobbies? What do you do to get away from work?

I am an avid athlete. I do triathlons - swimming, biking and running. It helps me clear my mind. Sailing is also my passion. But the most important priority for me is my family. They always come first.

What are your personal goals for next year?

Growing BLIK has become personal for me. It is my goal for 2020. I am totally focused on it. The possibilities are endless, as more and more people become familiar with it. This year we started the process of exporting technology abroad. A payment solution similar to BLIK will be available in the United Arab Emirates. We also have many requests for cooperation from other parts of the world. This is my main plan and challenge for the next year. Nothing will give me more satisfaction than being able to pay with BLIK anywhere in the world! That will be a dream come true.
